New York City Subway Train

New York City Subway Train. The number one downtown local, making all stops to south ferry.

The 1 Broadway – Seventh Avenue Local is a rapid transit service of the New York City Subway. It is represented by a red ball on station signs, route signs, the train itself and the official subway map. It uses the IRT Broadway – Seventh Avenue Line for its entire route.

The 1 service operates local at all times between Van Cortlandt Park – 242nd Street in Riverdale, Bronx and South Ferry in Lower Manhattan. It is the only service in the system that has elevated stations in Manhattan (125th Street and all stations north of and including Dyckman Street). It also has the longest service in Manhattan, going the furthest north at Marble Hill – 225th Street and furthest south at its terminal South Ferry.

Christopher "Chris" Cross (Edward G. Robinson), a meek amateur painter and cashier for clothing retailer J.J. Hogarth & Company, is fêted by his employer, honoring him for twenty-five years of dull, repetitive service. Hogarth presents him with a watch and kind words, then leaves getting into a car with a beautiful young blonde.

Walking home in Greenwich Village, Chris muses to an associate, "I wonder what it's like to be loved by a young girl." He helps prostitute Kitty (Joan Bennett), an amoral fast-talking femme fatale, he sees being apparently being attacked by a man, stunning the assailant with his umbrella. Chris is unaware that the attacker was Johnny (Dan Duryea), Kitty's brutish boyfriend, and sees her safely to her apartment building. Out of gratitude and bemusement, she accepts his offer for a cup of coffee at a nearby bar. From Chris's comments about art, Kitty believes him to be a wealthy painter, adding, "To think I took you for a cashier."

This video was taken by the crew of Expedition 30 on board the International Space Station. The sequence of shots was taken January 29, 2012 from 05:33:11 to 05:48:10 GMT, on a pass from just southwest of Mexico to the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Newfoundland. This pass begins looking over Central America towards the Gulf of Mexico and the southeastern United States. As the ISS travels northeast over the gulf, some southeastern United States cities can be distinguished, like New Orleans, Mobile, Jacksonville, and Atlanta. Continuing up the east coast, some northeastern states, like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City stand out brightly along the coastline. The Aurora Borealis shines in the background as the pass finishes near Newfoundland.

NARRATOR: More than two and half miles below the surface, the wreckage of the Titanic rests on the seafloor …… both as a memorial and a living laboratory.

One hundred years ago, the world's most advanced passenger steamship struck an iceberg. On April 15th, 1912, it sank – losing 1,496 lives.

The legend of Titanic was larger than her size, and finding the wreck site opened a door to not only exploration and scientific study, but to salvage as well.

With ties to multiple nations, steps needed to be taken to preserve and protect the integrity of the wreck site.

For the US, NOAA and the State Department negotiated an international agreement with representatives of the U.K., Canada, and France.

This agreement recognizes the wreck site as a memorial to those who died and a wreck of great archaeological, historical, and cultural importance.

The agreement set rules for research, exploration, and salvage.

The memory of the Titanic lives on in movies, books, and museums, but it’s the protection of the wreck site that will continue to yield clues about the fateful ship and its passengers.

Telstar satellite launched July 12, 1962 - Telstar satellite, 170 lbs, receives signal from Andover Maine, retransmit to Cornwall in Europe, launched on Delta rocket for ATT at cost of $50 million, pictures of ground station (either Maine or Cornwall), 1st TV pictures of dome at Andover transmitted (partial newsreel)

Telstar 1, primarily a communications satellite, carried an experiment designed to measure the energetic proton and electron distribution in the Van Allen belts. The spacecraft spin rate varied according to r=(178.2)exp(-t/333) rpm, where t was in days from launch. The spin axis original orientation was right ascension 81.96 deg and declination -65.57 deg. It varied slowly over the lifetime of the spacecraft. For example, on November 9, 1962, the right ascension was 94.05 deg, and the declination was -51.91 deg. Scientific information was transmitted by the spacecraft beacon, which was one of two onboard transmitters, via a PCM/FM/AM encoder.

The telemetry sequence required about 1 min. The spacecraft operated normally from launch until November 1962, when the command channel began to behave erratically. The satellite was turned on continuously to circumvent this problem. On November 23, 1962, the command channel ceased to respond. On December 20, the satellite was successfully reactivated, and intermittent data were obtained until February 21, 1963, when the transmitter failed.

The very next day we did actually make our start upon this remarkable expedition. We found that all our possessions fitted very easily into the two canoes, and we divided our personnel, six in each, taking the obvious precaution in the interests of peace of putting one Professor into each canoe. Personally, I was with Challenger, who was in a beatific humor, moving about as one in a silent ecstasy and beaming benevolence from every feature. I have had some experience of him in other moods, however, and shall be the less surprised when the thunderstorms suddenly come up amidst the sunshine. If it is impossible to be at your ease, it is equally impossible to be dull in his company, for one is always in a state of half-tremulous doubt as to what sudden turn his formidable temper may take.

For two days we made our way up a good-sized river, some hundreds of yards broad, and dark in color, but transparent, so that one could usually see the bottom. The affluents of the Amazon are, half of them, of this nature, while the other half are whitish and opaque, the difference depending upon the class of country through which they have flowed. The dark indicate vegetable decay, while the others point to clay soil.

Twice we came across rapids, and in each case made a portage of half a mile or so to avoid them. The woods on either side were primeval, which are more easily penetrated than woods of the second growth, and we had no great difficulty in carrying our canoes through them. How shall I ever forget the solemn mystery of it? The height of the trees and the thickness of the boles exceeded anything which I in my town-bred life could have imagined, shooting upwards in magnificent columns until, at an enormous distance above our heads, we could dimly discern the spot where they threw out their side-branches into Gothic upward curves which coalesced to form one great matted roof of verdure, through which only an occasional golden ray of sunshine shot downwards to trace a thin dazzling line of light amidst the majestic obscurity.

As we walked noiselessly amid the thick, soft carpet of decaying vegetation the hush fell upon our souls which comes upon us in the twilight of the Abbey, and even Professor Challenger's full-chested notes sank into a whisper. Alone, I should have been ignorant of the names of these giant growths, but our men of science pointed out the cedars, the great silk cotton trees, and the redwood trees, with all that profusion of various plants which has made this continent the chief supplier to the human race of those gifts of Nature which depend upon the vegetable world, while it is the most backward in those products which come from animal life. Vivid orchids and wonderful colored lichens smoldered upon the swarthy tree-trunks.
